What is a Medallion Signature Guarantee?
To sell or transfer US or Canadian securities – including stocks, shares, and investment accounts involving actively traded assets – a stock transfer form (or equivalent instruction document) must be completed. Crucially, the signature on this document must be “guaranteed” before a transfer agent will accept and process the transaction.
This requirement affects millions of UK-based shareholders and their estate representatives. The Medallion Signature Guarantee is a certification stamp applied to the transfer document, confirming the authenticity of the signature and the authority of the individual requesting the transfer.
The presence of a Medallion Guarantee assures the transfer agent that the instruction is valid, allowing them to proceed with the sale or transfer of the securities. It is a safeguard designed to protect both shareholders and financial institutions against fraud. As such, providers of the guarantee must be satisfied that the person signing the document is correctly identified and has the legal authority – supported by appropriate documentation – to act in relation to the asset.
The process can become increasingly complex where multiple parties are involved, including beneficiaries, co-owners, share registrars, transfer agents, and assets held across different jurisdictions. Working with a specialist firm such as Finders International can help streamline these requirements.
Our International Asset Services team has particular expertise in handling shares, foreign bank accounts, and investment portfolios, supporting estate representatives through each stage of the process. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
